Our instructors talk to many new boaters who struggle with the electronic equipment fitted to their boats! Some systems have complicated menu systems that leave users baffled. Equally, new boaters can be reluctant to use RADAR because the screen is confusing; Turning your RADAR to transmit in the marina can can present an overwhelming  amount of information so it’s turned off.  However turning the RADAR to transmit in more open waters will present a less confusing and clearer picture which is easier to interpret.

The COLREGS/IRPCS Rule 5 states:

‘Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.’

In the event of a collision it will be difficult to argue that you had electronic aids aboard your vessel but were not using them because you found the information confusing!
In reduced visibility i.e fog, RADAR and AIS will prove invaluable in keeping your vessel and crew safe .

The Mendez Marine ‘Understanding your Marine Electronics’ course is an un-certificated course designed to help you understand navigation equipment and how you can use it to better inform yourself of potential collision situations and also how you might use your equipment to navigate more effectively.

This course is not a replacement for the RYA RADAR course.
